A dedicated marathon runner was unexpectedly diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer. He is now urging everyone to pay attention to even the slightest changes in their health, hoping his story helps others catch early signs of this aggressive cancer.

    A Life-Altering Diagnosis

Meet Lee Rawlinson, 51, a devoted father of two and a passionate runner living in Essex, UK. It was Halloween when Lee got the news that would turn his world upside down—he had pancreatic cancer, which had also spread to his liver. Doctors informed him he had only months left to enjoy with his cherished family.

Lee, determined to make unforgettable memories with his loved ones, refers to this holiday season as his “last Christmas.” While facing this harsh reality, he decided to share his journey to bring attention to the disease, hoping to prevent others from walking a similar path.

With courage, Lee stated, “This will be my last Christmas. Death is approaching, and while I can’t change that, my biggest fear is leaving behind my wife and kids.”

    Recognizing Pancreatic Cancer’s First Signs

It all started with a mild ache in Lee’s lower abdomen in January, something he initially considered a stress-related issue. A consultation with his GP led to a referral to a specialist, but a 21-week wait delayed further testing. Initial tests showed no alarming results, and thus, nothing more was pursued immediately.

By autumn, his discomfort escalated to severe pain. “Daily painkillers brought no relief; it felt like a slow intrusion through my body,” Lee recounted. The pain peaked during his son’s sports event, pushing him to seek emergency care. A timely CT scan unveiled the heartbreaking news of terminal cancer.

The Importance of Listening to Your Body

Lee’s ordeal taught him the critical value of heeding what your body tells you. “Initially, I didn’t give much thought to that dull pain,” he reflected with regret. “Hindsight shows that pursuing further tests sooner could have been crucial for early diagnosis.”

Having discovered that his grandfather too battled with pancreatic cancer, Lee realized a possible genetic link. “Sometimes, it’s a matter of destiny,” shared Lee. By recounting his story, he hopes to motivate others to take any persistent or unusual pain seriously.

He emphasizes this advice: “Don’t discount constant pain or odd symptoms. Get checked, even if you think it’s minor—acting promptly might just save your life.”

    Creating Precious Moments

In the face of adversity, Lee is focused on creating joyful moments with his family. He treated his children to a magical experience in Lapland and is dedicated to forging enduring memories. “I aim to remain a presence in my children’s lives through the memories we create,” he expressed warmly.

He is also a vigorous advocate for increasing pancreatic cancer research and support, citing the stagnant survival rates since the 1970s. “This must improve,” warned Lee. “Our voices must be heard to ensure this illness doesn’t continue to devastate families.”

With unbreakable spirit, Lee savors each day with his family, balancing hope with the harsh truth of his condition. Through his campaign for awareness, he impels others to listen to their health and act without delay when necessary.
