Queen Camilla has gracefully stepped into enormous responsibilities, particularly as her husband, King Charles, continues his battle with cancer. Recently, they joyfully marked their 19th wedding anniversary, hoping for many more shared years ahead.

Camilla’s journey within the royal family hasn’t been a smooth one. Initially viewed as the “mistress” of the future king and disliked by many royal enthusiasts, she has evolved into a respected figure, sincerely committed to the Crown’s duties.

While King Charles has faced various health challenges over time, Queen Camilla’s health issues haven’t been as frequently discussed. Despite having Covid twice and a broken toe during Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral, she has had numerous hospital visits. Once, she had an unfortunate accident in Scotland, falling into a hole and being rescued by locals.

Camilla’s path to becoming Queen Camilla has been arduous. Her connection, rooted in a deep love story, with King Charles, began while he was still married to Princess Diana.

The Early Days of Queen Camilla

Charles and Diana officially parted ways in December 1992. Shortly afterward, the press released a transcript of a phone call between Charles and Camilla, exposing their intimate relationship even before his separation from Diana.

That phone call shocked the world, and according to “The Diana Chronicles,” the recording had been kept private for years by its originator.

The public’s reaction was overwhelmingly negative. Princess Diana was a beloved icon, and the thought of Charles causing her pain through infidelity was appalling to many.

The scandalous conversation, with phrases like “live inside her trousers,” was both shocking and seen as improper.

While Charles faced harsh criticism, Camilla also bore the brunt. The public, alongside certain royal family members, voiced disapproval of her actions. Many viewed her as “the woman who shattered Charles and Diana’s marriage.”

The notorious 1989 phone call not only confirmed Charles’s affair with Camilla while married to Diana but also revealed her infidelity to her own husband, Andrew Parker Bowles.

In the beginning, it was no surprise that Camilla wasn’t favored by the public, nor was she Queen Elizabeth’s favorite.

    Overcoming Public Backlash

In 2018, investigative journalist Tom Bower claimed that at first, Queen Elizabeth II refused to engage with Camilla. King Charles confronted his mother, asking her to “soften her antagonism,” so he could freely live with Camilla. The queen wasn’t pleased, reportedly expressing her displeasure to Charles.

Camilla faced difficulty gaining acceptance from Queen Elizabeth when her relationship with Charles became official. Years prior, when news of the affair broke, she retreated from the public eye due to harsh treatment.

Royals expert Angela Levin, in the 2022 book, “Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall: A Royal Survivor,” disclosed how Camilla endured “torrents” of public mistreatment. Levin noted that Camilla often stayed home to avoid backlash.

Additionally, Levin explained that Camilla feared going shopping or visiting shops, relying on friends to run her errands.

“It wasn’t easy for her as she was painted as the world’s most wicked woman, nicknamed derogatorily as ‘rottweiler,’” Levin recounted. “It’s unlikely Charles grasped how grueling it was for her. While busy with the country’s affairs, Camilla lacked royal family protection since she wasn’t officially a member. But once Charles grasped the situation, he arranged for her protection, funding it himself.”

Over time, Camilla gained public affection. Nevertheless, Angela Levin believes she “still carries the scars” of her early royal encounters.

    Queen Camilla’s Health Concerns

Despite these “scars,” Queen Camilla stands resilient today. With King Charles in cancer treatment, Camilla has admirably taken on immense responsibilities in his absence.

Though Queen Camilla has proven invaluable to the royal family, she, like many of us, has encountered health challenges. Reflecting on her life, she’s certainly experienced her share of fluctuations.

At 76 years old, with a busy agenda, it isn’t surprising she has faced health issues. Reports indicate she has displayed alarming symptoms during royal duties, prompting concern among some.

Camilla has long advocated for osteoporosis awareness. In 2001, she became president of the Royal Osteoporosis Society, initially supporting it in 1997. Her dedication is tied to her family’s struggles with the illness.

The Mayo Clinic describes osteoporosis as making bones weak and brittle. Even mild stress can cause breaks, particularly in the hip, wrist, or spine.

Osteoporosis occurs when new bone creation doesn’t match the rate of bone loss, they report.

Is Osteoporosis a Concern for Queen Camilla?

Queen Camilla’s mother sadly passed from osteoporosis complications in 1994, the same disease that claimed her grandmother. In 2019, Camilla addressed this at the Royal Osteoporosis Society, spotlighting the need for discourse and diagnosis.

“Twenty-five years ago, my mother succumbed to osteoporosis. Interestingly, she was my current age. Back then, the condition went undiscussed, rarely diagnosed, and was simply attributed to aging,” she shared in a speech.

While Queen Camilla works to fund research, there is concern she might develop or be at risk for osteoporosis herself.

According to the Mayo Clinic, a familial history increases personal risk. Speaking to Express, David Wiener, a training and nutrition specialist from Freeletics, revealed Camilla practices yoga and pilates — recommended for those her age to prevent ‘muscular pain.’

“Camilla has thankfully embraced Yoga and Pilates. It’s beneficial for maintaining flexibility,” told Wiener.

“Age prescribes less intense exercise to avoid muscular strain or injury, as bones become more fragile.”

“Both she and Charles delight in countryside strolls or dog walks. Walking offers a gentle, effective workout, aiding mental health, sleep, and more,” he continued.

“Exercise and Stretching: Vital As We Age”

In 2017’s Singapore visit, Camilla discussed her own fitness regime.

“Yoga is indeed beneficial, especially in aging, promoting less stiffness and better muscle health,” she noted. “Staying active is crucial with age; I incorporate some yoga and pilates.”

Beyond the risk of osteoporosis, Queen Camilla reportedly struggled with other ailments.

It’s suggested she has contended with recurrent sinusitis for years. In 2021, a royal admirer appeared to notice during the Armistice Day events.

In 2012, sinusitis forced her to cancel various royal duties due to the ailment.

“Over days, the Duchess of Cornwall developed sinusitis and a severe middle ear infection,” a spokesperson announced, explaining her inability to perform upcoming engagements.

While sinusitis normally doesn’t necessitate hospitalization, Camilla wasn’t immune to hospital visits.

In 2007, she underwent a hysterectomy. In 2010, her experiences were more taxing.

April 2010 required her hospitalization in Aberdeen after she fractured her leg walking near the Balmoral estate. According to the Guardian, she “took a tumble.”

A Slip in Scotland: The Hole Incident

“She was traversing slippery Scottish terrain when she fell, injuring her leg,” her spokesperson said.

“Following an x-ray, a twisted fibula fracture was diagnosed. Advised against bearing weight for six weeks, she donned a plaster cast but intended to keep her engagements.”

Subsequently, the then-duchess required a wheelchair for engagements over several weeks. Yet, what exactly transpired?

Writer Bob Colacello recounted in Vanity Fair later that year how Camilla was saved by two lone trail women.

“When questioned about her Scottish fall, Camilla shared that she stumbled into a hole on the moors, aided by two gracious women.

Camilla, appreciative of their discretion, expressed gratitude with a champagne case sent to each.

The royal family has been navigating challenging times in 2024’s early days. Nearly two years have passed since Queen Elizabeth’s passing, with widespread mourning for the long-reigning monarch.

For Camilla, Queen Elizabeth’s death marked not only emotional strain but physical trials.

Before Queen Elizabeth’s funeral, Charles and Camilla visited Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland on tour.

The Telegraph reported that during this time, Camilla was nursing a broken toe and, following the tour, sought retreat at her Wiltshire home.
