Adam DeVine, a movie actor, nearly lost his legs after being involved in a near-fatal accident. The actor has since spoken out about the event.
Adam DeVine is a multi-talented show business star born in Waterloo, Iowa, on November 7, 1983. He is married to Chloe Bridges, whom he married in 2021.
Despite his brilliant career, he would not have chosen the path of acting and comedy if he had not been in a near-fatal vehicle accident when he was young.
Unlike his wife, Chloe Bridges, DeVine is a producer and writer. He is a co-creator and one of the stars of the television sitcoms “Workaholics” and “Adam Devine’s House Party.”
He is best known for his roles in the smash blockbuster films “Pitch Perfect” and “Pitch Perfect 2.” He co-starred in the film Bumper with Rebel Wilson, Brittany Snow, Elizabeth Banks, and Skylar Astin. He also appeared on the iconic sitcom “Modern Family.” Before he got famous, the producer suffered from childhood trauma.
Adam DeVine disclosed on “Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard” in October 2019 that he was hit by a cement truck when he was 11 years old. The incident happened in Omaha, Nebraska, where he and his family had recently moved. It was the summer before sixth grade, and he had newly established new acquaintances.
DeVine and his friends were going to the convenience shop when the unimaginable occurred. When one of his buddies exclaimed, “Come on!” he mistook it for permission to cross the street while pushing a bicycle.
“I grew up in the suburbs, so new houses were being built daily. Three cement trucks were going down the hill, and two were coming down simultaneously,” he explained.
“And so after the third one passed going up the hill on my side of the street, I walked out with my bicycle and was hit by the cement truck coming down the other side. Taken under the wheel and spit out,” DeVine continued.
“Everything from his waist downwards was broken except for his right femur. Then he crushed everything from the knees down and took all my skin off,” he added.
For two weeks, the actor was placed in a medically induced coma. Doctors discussed amputating his legs when his lung collapsed. He claimed to be in excruciating pain:
“It hurt a lot, even with all the drugs.”
DeVine’s parents discovered him in the hospital. His mother was at the zoo with her friends when she received a note at the concession stand asking her to contact a specific number (he stated there were no cell phones at the time), and that is how they learned of his hospitalization.
Meanwhile, his father had fallen asleep at home after working the night shift. He was phoned on his home phone number, but he did not answer and let the call go to voice mail. He raced to the hospital to visit his son after hearing what the person on the other end of the phone had to say.
DeVine said he had 26 operations between the sixth grade and his freshman year of high school. Furthermore, he was unable to walk and spoke about his ordeal on “The Kelly Clarkson Show” in October 2019:
“I needed to relearn how to walk. And it took me two years to regain my leg strength and learn to walk again. I lost the muscle, destroyed everything from my knees, and had to relearn everything.”
Nonetheless, DeVine healed completely and avoided losing his legs. The actor attributes his entry into comedy to an unhappy experience. Following the incident, he was forced to use a wheelchair, and people mocked him.
Because he couldn’t defend himself physically, his father urged him to use words. He instructed him to come up with amusing things to say to them. He took the advice and ran with it; no one could touch him.
DeVine now supports Children’s Miracle Network Hospital after going through such a traumatic experience in his childhood. In November 2017, he took to his Instagram and retold his story to his followers, sharing his hospital experience alongside a throwback photo of him on the hospital bed.
