On Thursday, Al Roker broke some terrible news to his audience while paying eloquent respect to a significant person in his life.
Thom Bell, a renowned Philadelphia producer, arranger, and songwriter who was born in Jamaica and passed away at the age of 79, was remembered by the Today star on Instagram after he made a shocking departure announcement this week.
Al posted a picture of Thom and wrote: “Thom Bell, a renowned Philadelphia producer, passed died at age 79. My life’s soundtrack was his music.
“He was a part of the distinctive Sound Of Philadelphia, which included The Spinners, The O’Jays, The Delfonics, The Stylistics, and Elton John. I appreciate your present.”
Many of Al’s fans expressed their sorrow at the news in the comments section by leaving crying-face and praying-hand emojis as well as their own heartfelt remembrances of the late musician.
One of them said, “Such a terrible loss of an exceptional talent that was able to capture and create a sound like no other. Another wrote: “Enjoy your peace. I really enjoy the songs you sent us. Gratitude for his family.”
A third expressed sympathy and well wishes for Al’s quick recovery, writing: “Good news despite the sad news. The @todayshow would not be the same without you, so I hope you’re feeling better and getting stronger.”
Al has had a very difficult few weeks since, in addition to recovering from blood clots in his lungs, he also received the heartbreaking news that his sister Patricia had passed suddenly soon after he was released from the hospital.
The television personality, who has worked on Today for more than 25 years, was hospitalized for more than two weeks after Thanksgiving because of blood clots.
Al sent an update to viewers last week from home. Al has now taken a break from the show. “It’s been a struggle. I won’t mince words. I’ve had a lot of operations, but this one has been the worst thus far.
He went on: “There are many people and things for which I am grateful. You feel incredibly appreciative for this outpouring of prayers and appreciation as a result.”
