Nonetheless, the 57-year-old beauty queen has had her share of detractors who have attempted to discredit her success. The actress is now freely discussing her relationship with her mother, Teri, who has been her manager since she was a toddler.
Her first critic was her mother. “My mother would get drunk and say, ‘Why don’t you move your fat ass?’” the actress recounts. So I’ve always thought I had a big ass.” Her mother subjected her to body shaming, distorting her self-perception.
Her mother died in 2012 after losing her battle with alcoholism. Nonetheless, the actress’s statements about Shields left an indelible impression. Years were required to repair the damage done.
Her spouse of 17 years, playwright Chris Henchy, eventually encouraged her to accept her body as it was and realize her natural attractiveness.
She revealed, “I’d walk backward out of rooms, and he’d say, ‘No, I want to grab onto you,’” she recalls. Shields explained. “He praised my womanliness and my body. And I needed a man to help me rejoice.”
She was married to Andre Agassi from 1997 to 1999. She began performing as a teen, but her iconic Calvin Klein jeans ad, photographed by Richard Avedon in 1980, sealed her place as a cultural icon.
While the actress was always thought gorgeous by the general public, she admits that she was constantly criticized. “I modeled swimwear when I was 15, and even then, I didn’t think I had a swimsuit body,” she explained. “I wasn’t a supermodel but a cover girl. I was labeled ‘athletic,’ ‘not rail-thin,’ and ‘not a runway model.’ “Those messages permeate your consciousness,” the actress concluded.
She did another swimwear ad a few years ago, collaborating with Calvin Klein. She stated she was committed to the part and worked hard to look her best. “I knew I’d be ashamed and angry at myself if I didn’t look my best. I quit drinking beer and wine and started working out thrice weekly. “I was my best self,” she remarked, adding, “I was also hungry.”
It’s surprising to hear that Brooke Shields has insecurities despite her stunning attractiveness. Her mother and other enemies tried to make her feel inferior when everyone else thought she was lovely.
It’s great that her husband questioned her beliefs and reaffirmed her sense of beauty, assisting her in accepting her body as it was.
The actress recently opened up about a sexual assault over 30 years ago. Shields recently told People that she was attacked by a Hollywood executive shortly after graduating from Princeton University.
She blamed herself at the moment, but she’s had time to comprehend what happened over the years.”I’m more enraged now than I was then.” You have every right to be terrified. They are frightening scenarios. They don’t have to be violent to be frightening.”
Because “people didn’t believe those stories back then,” the model-turned-actress has confessed she was a victim of sexual assault for the first time. “I thought I’d never have to work again.”
Unfortunately, her narrative, which has become all too frequent in Hollywood, is portrayed in further depth in the upcoming two-part documentary Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields.”You see it all together doing the documentary, and it’s a miracle that I survived,” Shields remarked.
Shields’ career was at its “lowest point” after she graduated from Princeton University. She met with an anonymous Hollywood executive, expecting him to offer her a part in a film or a job; instead, he invited her to his hotel room after their meal.
He pretended to call a cab from his room to entice her to come to his room. But once there, he sexually assaulted her.
“I didn’t fight,” she stated flatly. “I just stood there frozen.”
Shields felt terrible about herself and blamed herself for the attack. “I kept telling myself, ‘I shouldn’t have done that.’” Why did I agree to go up with him? “I should not have had that drink at dinner.”
Shields first only told her close friend and former security consultant Gavin de Becker about the information. She is now ready to share her story in the hopes of “helping people not feel alone.”
“Everyone processes their trauma on their timetable. I want to advocate for women’s right to speak their minds.”
