Cher’s mother, Georgia Holt, died over the weekend at the age of 96.
Holt, a singer-songwriter, actress, producer, and model, was perhaps best remembered for her appearances in “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet” (1955). She also starred in “I Love Lucy” in 1956, as well as “Father’s Little Dividend” and “Lovely to Look At” in the same year.
Holt released her debut album “Honky Tonk Woman” in 2013, which she had initially recorded in the 1980s.
According to USA Today, Holt was the subject of a Life documentary named “Dear Mom, Love Cher” in 2013. The hour-long event featured interviews with Holt, her daughters Cher and Georganne LaPiere, and Cher’s children, Chaz Bono and Elijah Blue Allman, professionally known as P. Exeter Blue.
Holt got the idea for the documentary after discovering records of the previously unreleased album she recorded with Elvis Presley’s band in 1980.
Cher restored the tapes and recorded her mum singing and conversing to accompany them. Cher’s idea for a small endeavor to commemorate her mother’s 86th birthday grew into something much larger and more involved.
Holt, who was born in 1926 to a 13-year-old mother and a 20-year-old father, began her career as a young girl singing in Oklahoma saloons before pursuing stardom as a singer and actor in Hollywood.
Soon after Cher’s birth, she divorced her first husband, a truck driver named John Sarkisian, and placed her in a Catholic orphanage.
“I heard the abortion story as a teenager,” Cher remarked in “Dear Mom” in 2013.
“My mom’s orphanage story has been a difficult one her entire life, and she didn’t want to talk about it. ‘Mom, why didn’t you simply march in and take me?’ I asked. ‘I didn’t have the power,’ she explained. I didn’t have any money or a job, and the religion was quite powerful. Every day, I’d go see you, and you’d be crying. You have no idea what that was like.’ It was more difficult for women back then.”
Cher’s mother’s death occurs at a time when the rest of her life appears to be going so beautifully. She only recently made headlines when she revealed that she is currently in a relationship with a man 36 years her junior.
Alexander Edwards, a 36-year-old music producer, is that man.
Cher claimed that she’d already introduced Edwards to the rest of her family, adding that “love doesn’t know math!”. Her remark was most likely in response to people who questioned the two new lovebirds’ big age difference (Cher is 76, while her boyfriend is less than half that at 36).
Cher and Edwards met during Paris Fashion Week in October, according to Cher. We’re not claiming to be mathematical geniuses, but their relationship is still in honeymoon mode.
Nonetheless, many admirers expressed their happiness at seeing Cher so happy.
In response to those fans who were more protective of her, possibly seeing Edwards as a threat, Cher responded, “As we All Know…
You take a chance every time you make a decision. I’ve Always Taken Risks… It’s just who I am.”
“Love doesn’t know math,” the 76-year-old said of the couple’s age disparity. Rinpoche informed me, “Some people meet, others recognize.”
Cher has been through enough that one would think she’s more than capable of detecting red flags if they were present. Since the 1960s, the singer, actress, and television personality rose to prominence alongside husband Sonny Bono, and swiftly rose to dizzying heights at the pinnacle of the music industry.
Edwards, on the other hand, has had some success in the music industry despite not having the iconic Cher’s name and brand. He is the vice president of A&R at the famed record company, which has a roster of performers that includes Rihanna, Nas, Public Enemy, and Justin Bieber. He is only 36 years old.
Losing a mother is one of the most difficult things any of us will ever have to go through.
Cher is in our thoughts and prayers during this terrible time, and we hope she may find the strength to persevere.
