No one can knock Jamie Lee Curtis off her post-Oscars high.
On the Today show earlier this month, the Everything, Everywhere at Once star discussed her fantastic accomplishment and becoming the joyful new owner of a prized Academy Award.
She also talked about how she intended to refer to her monument.
“The desire for attention and recognition for one’s work is universal,” Curtis remarked. “You hope that whoever you work for appreciates you. And this is a gorgeous, gleaming token of gratitude.”
The 64-year-old actress won her first Academy Award for performing in Everything, Everywhere at Once.
“Both my mother and father were nominated for Academy Awards in different categories,” Curtis explained. “I just won an Academy Award!”
During an emotional acceptance speech, she expressed her gratitude to her family and everyone who has supported her “genre flicks” since she began her career in 1977.
Curtis appeared on the Today Show with Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb on March 14, admitting she was still in shock.
“I never thought I’d have this couple of days in a million years, and the whole thing moves me.”
When asked if she had given the figurine a name, Curtis provided a lovely explanation for her decision not to do so.
In honor of her 26-year-old daughter Ruby, she would refer to her Oscar statuette as they/them. (Curtis revealed her youngest kid was transgender in 2021).
“I’m having them be they/them in support of my daughter Ruby,” the actor explained. “I’m just going to refer to them as ‘them,’ they/them and they’re doing fantastic.”
“They’re getting settled.”
According to Jamie Lee, a young person coming out as trans faces a severe learning curve.
“It’s speaking a different language,” she explained. “It’s learning new vocabulary and terminology. I’m new to it. I’m not going to pretend to know a lot about it. And I’m going to squander it.”
“I’m going to make errors.” “I’d like to avoid making major mistakes,” she added.
“You still mess up, and I’ve messed up twice today. We’re only human.”
“But it’s worth it if one person reads this, sees a picture of Ruby and me, and says, ‘I feel free to say this is who I am,’” she says.
Ruby has spent her entire life avoiding the spotlight despite being descended from a Hollywood dynasty; she currently works as a video editor for a YouTube gamer.
“I was aware Ruby had a boyfriend. Ruby had used the term bi, and I knew it. However, gender identity and sexual orientation are distinct concepts,” according to the two-time Golden Globe winner.
