It can’t be easy to become famous as a teenager. It must be difficult always to feel as if you are being watched and analyzed. You have no private life and your followers like reading about your love affairs.
Kristy McNichol, 60, didn’t have the option of being upfront about who she indeed was, at least not in the 1970s. As a result, she battled her secrets and illness for years.
Kristy McNichol was born in Los Angeles on September 11, 1962. Kristy was one of those actresses that appeared in everything in the 1970s and 1980s, having begun her career as an actress at a young age.
Kristy won over fans’ hearts in the 1976 television series “Family” as Letitia “Buddy” Lawrence. She won two Emmys for her performance in that role. She appeared in the films “Little Darlings,” “Women of Valor,” “You Can’t Hurry Love,” and “Two Moon Junction” in addition to the television series “Empty Nest.”
Kristy had several high-profile relationships with men towards the start of her career.
According to DatingCelebs, Kristy purportedly had a relationship with American actor and television producer Scott Baio in 1977. A year later, she began dating musician and actor Leif Garret, albeit it didn’t last long. They split up in 1979 after only two years together.
The fact was that her heart was not for men. According to DatingCelebs, she fell in love with actress Ina Liberace in the early 1980s. On January 24, 1980, the pair attended the Sixth Annual People’s Choice Awards at the Hollywood Palladium:
She was also in a relationship with Canadian actress Elisabeth Brooks, who died in 1997 at 46.
Mental health issues were pursuing her.
But things were not so sunny behind the scenes. Despite her fame, affection, and admiration, Kristy felt she was frequently depressed and emotionally unstable, hindering her work.
Kristy broke down and fled to California while filming in France one Christmas.
“I couldn’t eat, and I scarcely slept the whole month I was in France. When I did sleep, I had odd dreams. I couldn’t stop crying. My weight dropped to around 96 pounds. Anxiety is constant. I was usually shaky as a leaf. “I was freaking out, weeping, confused, and I didn’t know what was going on,” she told NewsAmomama.
There was no diagnostic for what she had at the time, but she found a doctor who helped her understand her emotional breakdowns. Kristy suffered from bipolar disorder, which she attributes to insufficient childhood care.
McNichol announced her retirement from performing in June 2001:
“Many people have been wondering what I’ve been up to. After 24 years of service, I decided to retire. My gut instinct was that it was time to play my most important role – myself! It has to be the best thing that has ever occurred to me. “I know many of my fans are sad that I’m not now acting; nevertheless, some may not realize that the process I’m in right now is important and vital for my happiness and well-being,” she stated.
She left her career as an actor behind and, in recent decades,
Kristy lives away from the cameras with her life partner, Martie Allen.
They are quite private and do not reveal much information, but we know that Martie was born on January 1, 1960, and was also an actor. She attempted to establish a career in film and television, but she was never as successful as her wife, Kristy.
According to multiple websites, the couple began dating in the early 1990s and are now married. But it wasn’t until 2012 that Kristy opened up about their connection, claiming they had been together for decades.
She stated her sexuality in an interview with People because she wanted to “be transparent about who I am.” Kristy shared her tale as she “approached 50” to help others in the same predicament. Years of suspicion were put to rest when she confessed that she was a lesbian.
“She hopes that coming out can benefit kids who need support. “She wants to help people who feel different,” said her publicist, Jeff Ballard.
She stated that she had no plans to return to acting in the same statement. Instead, she devotes her time to tennis, yoga, travel, and raising her miniature dachshunds.
“She is content and healthy. “And she enjoys a very secluded existence,” Jeff Ballard explained.
True love will always find a way, and I’m so glad Kristy is finally living the life she deserves.
