Gettin’ Old, Luke Combs’ new 18-song album, includes “Take You With Me,” a touching song about parenting and a homage to his son.
Combs co-wrote the song with James McNair and Rob Williford, and the poignant ballad sees a future Combs reflecting on his son, Tex Lawrence, and the things he taught him along the road.
“Daddy, what’s that mean, that little turtle and a rabbit? / He sat me in that seat, showed me the wheel and how to grab it / He said, ‘I’ll work the pedals if you climb up on my knee / I’ll take you with me,’” Combs recalls in the first verse.
Throughout the song, the vocalist muses on other lovely father-son memories he’s experienced with his child, all founded on a profound desire to recapture those priceless days.
“If it was up to me, we’d do everything together / And when you’re young like that, you think those days last forever / Didn’t know back then how much those words would mean / ‘I’ll take you with me,’” Combs notes in the chorus.
Combs and his wife Nicole revealed on March 20 that they are expecting their second child. He also gave fans a sneak peek of “Take You With Me” in that unexpected announcement post.
Of Growing Old, It’s “about the stage of life I’m at right now,” says Combs. “I’m sure many of us are in, have been through, or will go through it.”
“It’s about coming of age, appreciating where life is now but missing how it used to be, continuing to fall in love with the one you love and loving them no matter what, living in the now but still wondering how much time you have left, family, friends, being appreciative, and leaving a legacy,” he adds.
On Saturday, Combs will kick off his highly anticipated World Tour (March 25). The 35-city tour will begin in Arlington, Texas, and will travel to locations throughout the United States and Australia, New Zealand, Sweden, Germany, and France. Combs’ final show for this tour will take place on October 19 in London.
