Prince Harry and Meghan Markle initially hoped for a peaceful and sunny life in California, but their journey hasn’t been without challenges.
When they made the big move from Britain to the United States, they aimed for a fresh start. Yet, they’ve encountered several hurdles along the way. One of the main issues has been their struggle to make friends, particularly for Harry, who seems to be missing his old life and companions back in Britain.
Royal expert Tom Quinn has suggested that Harry is considering buying a house in Britain. This would provide him a place to stay when he visits his family, with whom he’s had a strained relationship since stepping down from his royal duties.
Although Harry has visited Britain a few times, whether he would bring his family along remains uncertain. Meghan is reportedly concerned about the safety of their children when in the UK.
A Close Source Discusses Meghan’s Decision
A source familiar with the Sussexes revealed that Meghan chose not to travel to Britain with Harry for the Invictus Games celebration. “It’s reached a point where Meghan doesn’t feel safe bringing the children to the UK. The discussion now revolves around either increasing security for the family or Harry traveling alone,” the source commented.
Last year, Harry challenged a UK Home Office decision that reduced his security protection while in the country. After stepping back from royal duties, he lost his automatic police protection through the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (RAVEC). Notably, his offer to cover security expenses was declined, as British police services cannot be hired privately.
Harry expressed his disappointment through a statement read by his lawyer, Shaheed Fatima KC, on the BBC: “It was with a great deal of sadness that my wife and I felt compelled to step back from our roles and leave in 2020.”
Emphasizing his emotional bond, he stated, “The UK is my home. It holds an important place in my children’s heritage, and I want them to feel as comfortable here as they do in the US. This sense of home cannot be achieved if we cannot ensure their safety on UK soil.”
He further added, “I cannot expose my wife to such risks, and, given my past experiences, I am hesitant to put myself in harm’s way unnecessarily.”
However, the couple still retains close ties with a few royal family members, notably Princess Eugenie.
A New Residence in Portugal
The Sussexes have recently acquired a property in Portugal, located near Princess Eugenie’s residence. Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams speculates this might be a step to maintain ties with select royals and possibly repair relations with King Charles and Prince William.
Speculation on Marriage Stability
Amid recent developments, speculation regarding a potential strain in Harry and Meghan’s marriage has been swirling. An insider shared with Closer that Meghan is “very worried” the royals might “lure” Harry back into the fold.
“If deemed safe, she may allow Harry to take Archie and Lilibet to visit their grandfather, King Charles,” the source told The Sun. “With a home in Portugal, Meghan can join them with the kids without feeling confined.”
Both Harry and Meghan have embarked on several solo ventures recently. According to a source from GB News, this has taken an emotional toll on Meghan: “She’s been under great pressure, dealing with rumors about her and Harry’s relationship.”
The source continued, “Although this wasn’t their intention, having separate engagements seems to suit their current circumstances, allowing them to remain committed to causes they individually cherish.”
“While Harry’s solo appearances have been praised, Meghan faces criticism based on her statements or fashion choices, echoing past royal scrutiny,” added the source.
PR expert Ed Coram James suggests that their solo projects could favorably reshape their individual reputations.
A Strategy to Rebrand
Since their famous Oprah interview, their mutual image has become “more controversial” and commercially strained, Coram James observed in the Mirror. “This stems from ongoing disputes with the royal family and Meghan’s relatives, appearances suggesting privilege oblivion, and mixed commercial ventures.”
“Overcoming perceptions of entitlement, aggression, hypocrisy, and incompetence is challenging but possible. The initial step is distancing from these brand associations,” Coram James elaborated.
“When together, the Sussex brand is, from a PR viewpoint, divisive. Separately, they might build new, independent identities, potentially reuniting for a stronger combined brand in the future.”
Interview with PR Expert Renae Smith
Renae Smith, director of PR firm Atticism, shares a similar view but acknowledges potential long-term relationship impacts from this strategy.
“Pursuing individual brands might succeed over time but could ignite public speculation initially,” Smith noted.
“Despite this, the transformation could allow them to establish distinct brand identities reflecting their diverse goals and connecting with their unique audiences.”
Meghan and Harry at a Professional Crossroads
Meghan and Harry have acknowledged themselves to be at a “crossroads” regarding their professional paths. Recently, Meghan attended a Thanksgiving event organized by the Southern California Welcome Project in cooperation with their Archewell Foundation, coinciding with Harry’s commitments in Canada related to the Invictus Games.
During the event, Meghan expressed her appreciation for the chance to connect with women resettling from Afghanistan. “Led by Mina’s List, this initiative over the past year has fostered community through storytelling and provided a safe haven for Afghan women resettling in the U.S.,” she stated.
The couple plans to appear jointly at the Invictus Games in February 2025, likely bringing along their children for this rare public family outing.
