On March 25, Broadway composer Andrew Lloyd Webber confirmed the terrible loss of his son, Nicholas “Nick” Lloyd Webber. Before his death at 43, the film composer and music producer was diagnosed with stomach cancer.
Andrew provided an update on his status on March 23, stating that his son had pneumonia and had been placed in hospice care.
“I am heartbroken to have to announce the death of my beloved elder son Nick a few hours ago at Basingstoke Hospital,” Andrew said in a statement. “His entire family has gathered, and we are all heartbroken. Thank you for your kind words during this trying time.”
Following in his father’s footsteps, albeit in a different industry, Nick composed music for various short films, most notably for the 2021 feature “The Last Bus.”
Nick also wrote the music for the BBC One series “Love, Lies, and Records,” which retells Antoine de Saint-“The Exupéry’s Little Prince.”
With a father like Andrew Lloyd Webber, who was knighted solely for his musical prowess, Nicholas “Nick” Lloyd Webber’s talents were surely scrutinized. Still, he continued to live up to his family’s reputation.
When it came time to release his composition for the “Love, Lies, and Records” series, Nick said in a 2011 interview with The Telegraph that he was aware of the world’s eyes on him and the pressures that came with it.
“I dropped the Lloyd bit for a long time – to see what the reaction would be,” he told the publication. “I heard something on the radio and thought, ‘Well, I’m certainly not a complete moron.’ ‘Hold on, if other people are willing to work with me without the surname, maybe I should simply get on with it,’ I reasoned.”
Nick was not only talented, but his family also adored him. Only days before his death, his sister, Imogen, shared a beautiful childhood photo of the two in identical “Cats” t-shirts.
She said that she honored Nick’s request to take a break from seeing him be at “Bad Cinderella,” adding, “We’ve always supported Dad and his concerts, albeit in slightly more garments from this photo on.” I’ll be back soon to give Nick another hug.” Our hearts go out to Nick’s family.
