Ricky Nelson, born Eric Hilliard Nelson, was a legendary teen idol of the 50s. His rise to fame came at a young age when he and his brother joined the cast of their parents’ sitcom, The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet. As the show ran for sixteen years, Ricky attended school and eventually reached Hollywood High School.
Although Ricky’s father wanted him to pursue higher education, Ricky’s talent and success in the music industry made his parents accept his decision to focus on his career. In fact, at just 17 years old, Ricky’s performance of “I’m Walking” on the show became an instant hit, propelling him into a new world of music.
With the success of “I’m Walking,” Ricky went on to release more hit songs like “Garden Party,” “Fools Rush In,” “For You,” “Poor Little Fool,” and “Travelin’ Man.” His popularity in the industry soared, and he became a household name.
In 1963, Ricky married Kristin Harmon, and they had four children together, including twins Matthew Gray Nelson and Gunnar Eric Nelson. Initially, their marriage seemed perfect, but troubles arose as they both embraced a hippy lifestyle and alcohol abuse. Eventually, Kristin filed for divorce and was granted temporary custody of their children, leading to accusations of poor parenting from both parties.
Sadly, just months after their split, tragedy struck Ricky’s life. He was involved in a plane accident that claimed his life. Ricky had always been uncomfortable with flying and had even sought therapy to overcome his fears. On the day of the accident, he had a gut feeling and made a last-minute call to his twins, instructing them not to board the plane with him.
The DC-3 plane Ricky boarded with his then-girlfriend caught fire, but the pilot managed to land it. However, all the passengers on board lost their lives. The true cause of the accident remains a mystery, with speculations about problems with the gasoline heater.
Despite the tragic loss of their father, Ricky’s sons, Matthew and Gunnar, have continued his musical legacy. They are musicians in their own right and view their music as an ongoing tribute to their father, whom they consider their best friend.
The story of Ricky Nelson is both heartbreaking and inspiring. His decision to trust his instincts and save the lives of his twins is a testament to his love and dedication as a father. Today, his music lives on, and his sons carry his memory in their hearts.
