Tina Turner is unquestionably a musical legend. From her early success in the 1960s to her rise to solo superstardom in the 1980s, the best-selling diva has had a career unlike any other.
However, the aging celebrity has been plagued by health challenges recently, which have kept her out of the spotlight. Where is Tina Turner in 2022? This is a contemporary overview of the life of the rock icon.
Tina Turner was born in Brownsville, Tennessee, on November 26, 1939, and will be 83 years old in 2022. She married German music executive Erwin Bach in 2013 after more than 25 years of marriage, and the couple now lives in Switzerland.
The couple has lived in Switzerland since the 1990s, but Turner did not gain Swiss citizenship until 2013, after giving up her American citizenship.
“I am extremely satisfied with Switzerland and I feel at home here,” the “Private Dancer” singer stated in a 2013 interview. I can’t imagine a more beautiful place to live.”
After embarking on her 11th performance tour, appropriately titled Tina! 50th Anniversary Tour, in 2009, the iconic performer announced her intention to retire from the stage. Turner revealed her decision in 2019: “I was just tired of singing and making everyone happy. That was the only thing I’d ever done in my life.”
The rock star, on the other hand, did not completely vanish. She helped to create Tina: The Tina Turner Musical in 2016, which premiered in the United Kingdom in 2018 and on Broadway in 2019.
Adrienne Warren won the Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical for the critically acclaimed production, which got 12 Tony Award nominations in total.
In 2020, she collaborated with Kygo on a remix of “What Love Got to Do With It.” Kygo said of the album, “I couldn’t be more happy to collaborate with Tina Turner, who is an icon that I grew up listening to. “What’s Love Got To Do With It?” is one of my all-time favorite songs, so having the opportunity to rework it has been a huge step forward in my career.”
Since her retirement, the eight-time Grammy Award winner has received numerous distinctions, including a Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018.
She was honored into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, the first time in 1991 for her work as one half of the duo Ike and Tina Turner, and the second time in 2021 for her remarkable solo career. In 2019, she was also inducted into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame.
Unfortunately, at her advanced age, the megastar has been afflicted by health problems. Turner had severe kidney failure and was placed on dialysis in the middle of the 2010s, in addition to having a stroke and being diagnosed with intestinal cancer.
In her memoirs, My Love Story, the singer stated that by 2016, her kidneys were only functioning at 20% and she was on the verge of death. Her husband, Erwin Bach, was ultimately responsible for her rescue.
We were happy, and he would go to any length to keep us together, she explained. “He indicated that he did not want another woman or a new life.” Turner received Bach’s kidney donation, and both surgeries were successful in 2017.
“His willingness to give me his kidney was a gift of love,” the grateful singer remarked, “and he remained cool and collected and peaceful.”
Turner has admitted that she will have health issues for the rest of her life. “I know that my medical adventure is far from over,” she added.
“After a transplant, it seems like there are always more tests, doctor’s appointments, or biopsies to do. But I’m still here. We have reason to rejoice because we are both alive and closer than we could have anticipated.”
