Whoopi Goldberg Claims Bakery Denied Her Service for Political Reasons
NYC Bakery Defends Itself Against Allegations
Whoopi Goldberg recently shared on “The View” her experience of being denied service by a bakery in Staten Island, due to her political views. However, the bakery’s owner rebukes these claims.
During her birthday celebration on “The View,” Goldberg wanted to indulge in Charlotte Russe desserts, a nostalgic treat for her. However, she reported that her order almost did not come through because the bakery purportedly disapproved of her political outlook.
Goldberg, on air, suggested that her ordering troubles were due to her outspoken political stance, rather than any other factor. “They did not like my politics,” Goldberg stated, as she recounted the incident to the audience.
Regardless of the annoyance, Goldberg encouraged everyone to enjoy the desserts in honor of her mother’s memory. “This is a celebration,” she noted, inviting her co-hosts to partake in the treat despite the alleged snub.
The distinctive pink polka dot packaging on the desserts revealed their origin from Holtermann’s Bakery, an establishment long known for its family ownership and presence on Staten Island.
In response to Goldberg’s claims, bakery owner Jill Holtermann insisted that the issues Goldberg faced were unrelated to politics. Holtermann mentioned that technical issues, particularly with their boilers, were responsible for the inconvenience.
Holtermann explained to reporters, “I couldn’t commit due to ongoing boiler issues, not political alignment.” The bakery, indeed, managed to fulfill Goldberg’s order of 50 desserts for her television appearance at a later time.
In the wake of the accusations aired on the show, Holtermann expressed that her bakery has been inundated with calls, both positive and negative, from the public.
The clash highlights an ongoing public conversation about politics’ role in business, especially those in diverse communities. The incident also underscores the pressures faced by small businesses balancing operational challenges while navigating the political affiliations of high-profile personalities.
