Traumatic flashbacks. Jennifer Grey is upfront and honest about the intricacies of her relationship with Matthew Broderick in her memoir, Out of the Corner: A Memoir, including the horrific vehicle accident that claimed the lives of two people.
“The automobile accident in Ireland was, I would say, top three traumas of my life, maybe top one,” the Ferris Bueller’s Day Off star, 62, said in an interview. “When you have a near-death experience and watch other people’s deaths, it’s incredibly tough to communicate.
It was rather unsettling to be alone on a country road in the middle of nowhere, with no one close or aware. It inspired a slew of additional changes in my life.”
“Matthew had lived, but he was comatose, had amnesia, and was really gravely damaged,” the actress explained. “I thought he was dead. I was unaware of the tragic deaths of two more women at the time. You just don’t recover the same way from anything like that.”
The Friends alum told ET that no information about the crash was withheld, and The Producers actor Matthew Broderick was not at blame, even if he was driving at the time.
She continued, “I wasn’t holding any knowledge that others seem to think I did, since they were seeking for an explanation and there wasn’t one because it was an accident. Nobody was drinking, and [Broderick] was an excellent driver.
It was purely coincidental. It was a nightmare, and I’m still concerned about the Irish family.
They met while working on the set of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Before getting engaged, the former couple kept their relationship a secret during the filming of the 1986 film. They had been dating for 12 years until breaking up in 1988. Broderick moved on after his marriage to Sarah Jessica Parker in 1997.
After splitting up with the Daybreak actor, the New Yorker was set up on a blind date with Johnny Depp, whom she claimed in her 2022 biography as “ridiculously attractive” but “very possessive and paranoid.”
“He’d started missing his flights home to LA because he’d overslept,” she said, “or when he did get home, he’d be incredibly envious and worried about what I’d been doing while he was gone.”
The Red Dawn actress called it split with Depp, 58, just before her 29th birthday when he left for a meeting and began what she called a “self-imposed streak of reckless, destructive decision-making.”
The Sweeney Todd actor moved on from Grey to Winona Ryder, who happened to live next door to Grey at the time.
“It was the normal horror of feeling replaced, like you never existed, but on steroids,” the Dirty Dancing actor said.
