Katie Stricker Curtis thought it would be amusing to wear her new Chewbacca mask while giving delivery. It was also well received by hospital personnel.
The force was clearly with Katie Stricker Curtis, 32, when she gave birth to her first child, a daughter named Jayden Lee, on January 3rd.
A medical assistant from Windsor, Ontario, opted to wear a Star Wars Chewbacca mask during childbirth, which had the staff at Windsor Regional Hospital in stitches.
On January 2nd, she shared a ten-second video to her Facebook page of herself in labor while wearing the Chewy mask, which has now received over 216,000 views.
It’s not the first time a Chewbacca mask has made headlines for all the wrong reasons. Earlier this year, a video of a woman wearing a Chewbacca mask went viral. Candace Payne, aka “Chewbacca Mom,” filmed herself in her car, joyfully grinning as she tried on the new Chewbacca mask she had just purchased from Kohl’s.
“I saw the original Chewbacca video over the summer and thought it was hilarious!” Curtis observed. “I just kept laughing and laughing at it!”
Curtis was nervously attempting to induce labor as her pregnancy came to an end. “My brother got me the mask for Christmas as a joke, expecting me to laugh myself into labor. So I figured it’d be fun if I wore the mask for some of my work.”
Even when she was in labor, Curtis kept to her plan. She remembered the amusing mask and wore it during the third hour of labor. Scott Curtis, 40, shot the short video and sent it to his wife’s brother, who turned Curtis’ actual moans into “Chewbacca noises.”
The siblings found it humorous, as did the labor and delivery personnel. “My doctor and all the nurses thought it was incredibly humorous!” she said.
Curtis claimed that the video was intended for her brother and that she hadn’t paid much attention to it until they decided to put it on Facebook. “One of my friends requested if she could make it public so she could share it with her friends,” she screamed.
Her friends and family were unsurprised by her actions because she is “always a goofball” and “the class clown,” as she described.
“I hope I never lose my sense of humor,” she remarked. “It’s one of my most valuable possessions.”
Any critics, she says, are taking her joke too seriously.
“I try not to read the comments because there are always those out there with no personality or sense of humour who only have awful things to say,” she stated. Curtis maintains she was not trying to steal the original “Chewbacca Mom” video in order to get internet fame.
“Don’t you think if I was trying to mimic someone, I would have done more than a 10-second phone video? Seriously. Also, no one will ever surpass the original Chewbacca Mom! That video was truly amazing! Her laughter was contagious!”
One thing is certain: with his humorous mother by his side, baby Jayden will never experience the dark side.
