Frontotemporal dementia, or FTD for short, is a type of dementia revealed by Bruce Willis’ family.
In a statement released on the 16th of February, the 67-year-old star’s family said that while the news is “heartbreaking,” “it is a comfort to have a definite diagnosis finally.”
“There are currently no cures for the illness, but we hope that will change in the coming years. We hope that any media coverage will be directed toward raising awareness about this disease, which will require much more education and research as Bruce’s health deteriorates,” according to the statement.
Willis’ family, which includes his wife Emma Heming Willis, ex-wife Demi Moore, and daughters, made his aphasia diagnosis public for the first time in 2022. Willis announced that he would take a break from acting due to a medical condition impairing his cognitive function.
Bruce “always believed in using his voice in the world to help others, and to raise awareness about important topics both publicly and privately,” according to a recent statement from his family.
“We know in our hearts that if he could today, he would respond by bringing global attention and a sense of connection to those who are also coping with this crippling condition and how it affects so many people and their families,” the statement said.
According to the Mayo Clinic, frontotemporal dementia primarily affects the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain. These brain regions are frequently associated with personality, behavior, and language.
Willis and Heming Willis have two daughters, Mabel and Evelyn. He and Moore share fatherhood for their three daughters, Rumer, Scout, and Tallulah.
